Salary: The starting salary is £58,310, which includes allowances totalling £2,841. The salary is broken down as £55,469 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £60,507. There is a location allowance of £1,841 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000

The data office is the single place of accountability across the Met that:

  • owns and drives the data compliance and analytics agenda
  • brings together the accountabilities that are currently dispersed across the Met business areas
  • consolidates and further develops existing Met data and insight services
  • enables data sharing and collaboration to serve the public and external partners

The role

As a senior data analyst, you'll manage and mentor a team of data analysts and be a key member of an agile multi-disciplinary analytics team, collaborating with performance analysts, data engineers and data scientists to model and deliver large data sets and analytical reports. We're looking for you to use data analysis to identify the make recommendations based on what the data is telling us.

Our data analysts focus on approaching problem solving through the use of data modelling, proactive and reactive analysis, and visualisation. We have a number of high-profile programmes which you could be asked lead the data analysis on, including Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG), improving our communication centre (999), efficiency and public services, major crime. The work of our data analysts is invaluable in supporting decision making from strategic policy at a corporate level through to tactical and operational decisions on the front-line.

You'll be undertaking data modelling, cleansing and enrichment, building and reviewing complex data models, and using data integration tools and languages to integrate and store data, whilst mentoring and developing colleagues. We have a set of defined data quality standards ensuring interoperability with other data sets, enabling reuse to improve modelling and integration patterns and standards. You'll then apply these standards and best practices to present, communicate and disseminate data to inform and influence. At this level we expect you to be able to review, advise and support colleagues to establish processes, standards and templates for others to follow, improving the efficiency and quality of visualisations using a number of data visualisation tools and techniques including Excel, SQL (structured query language), PowerBI, and Tableau.

Throughout 2023 and 2024 we are implementing a new IT CONNECT system, which is underpinned by a POLE (Person, Object, Location, Event) database, which will give us even more comprehensive datasets for our analysts to work with.

Responsibilities

  • apply tools and techniques for data analysis and data visualisation, including the use of business information tools
  • identify, collect and migrate data to and from a range of systems
  • manage, clean, abstract and aggregate data alongside a range of analytical studies on that data
  • lead the data analysis element of a multi-disciplinary agile team to logically problem solve
  • manipulate and link different data sets, providing the business with accurate, relevant and timely data, research and performance information that contributes to:
    • a culture of continuous improvement
    • enhanced efficiency
    • evidence-based decision-making in the police
  • summarise and present data and conclusions in the most appropriate format for users
  • build dashboards conform to principles identified by the Dashboard Delivery Group
  • business liaison, requirements gathering, negotiating and agreeing deliverables with other teams and units
  • act as point of escalation for data modelling and data visualisation requests and queries

We are transforming and maturing our collective Data Management capability. We're the first police service to use the governments Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) capability framework as a foundation for our skills development.

For this role we are using the data engineer framework. We're looking for candidates who can demonstrate being at the practitioner level. You'll be expected to apply the skill without support, determine and use the most appropriate tools and techniques and share knowledge and experience in a combination of skills.
