About This Opportunity
Do you want to play a crucial role as part of our engineering team, wider engineering and data communities, with a dedication to excellent technical quality, and build, maintain and evolve our data management capabilities whilst embracing industry best practices and standards?
In this role, you’ll be delivering projects ranging from Technological implementations, software implementations, pipeline automation, metadata ingestion across the length and breadth of the software development lifecycle. In addition to this, you will manage and lead a team of software and data management engineers, establish and communicate standards and best practice across the wider lab and platform engineering teams.
Where you will make a difference
As a Lead Software Data Engineer, you'll work across multiple teams, providing guiding values to ensure that our services are built to our architectural principles and encouraged capabilities; be passionate for mentoring people in a “player-coach” model, and help drive agile adoption in the teams and adoption of collaboration tools. You’ll collaborate efficiently and deepen relationships with teams in UK (London, Manchester and Bristol) and India, and network with user groups to understand the direction of travel for our services.

What You’ll Need
This is first and foremost a technical role, and will involve contributing individually, in addition to having an element of people management and leadership.
You would be the ideal candidate for this position if you are a data engineer that has moved into a leadership position, or ready for the next step in your career with an active interest in mentoring and leading more junior colleagues and previous demonstratable experience in doing so.
Below is a list of the essential technical and behavioural skills we are looking for, for this role:
Technical Skills and Experience
- Previous working experience in data engineering including Prototyping, Build, Test, Implementation and Application Support
- Significant experience in Data Management tooling and their application e.g. Atacama (Data Quality), ILM (Archiving), Collibra (Meta data management), Google Dataplex, Azure Purview
- Working knowledge of Metadata Solutions and how they are used to drive delivery
- Previous experience of DevOps processes and tooling i.e. GitHub, Jenkins and Spinnaker
Behavioural Skills
- Leadership and Line management experience with a track-record of empowering and guiding engineering teams to fulfil their potential and designing solutions
- Excellent communication Skills with experience of understanding, translating and implementing business requirements and building positive relationships with engineering teams and product owners, helping to translate strategies into pragmatic solutions.
- Continuous Improvement mindset with an interest and curiosity about learning new tools and techniques and help and encourage others to do the same.
We’d also welcome the following desirable skills:
- Champion of cultural changes including adoption of Agile and DevOps tooling e.g. JIRA, Confluence etc and practices e.g. SAFe
- Hands on experience Programming languages, object orientated programming, solution and data management tooling, and infrastructure knowledge
- Understanding or ideally experience of Cloud Native solutions including Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Azure
