About us;

“Hands on Mindset”, we’re raising our technical bar across the group and want to find someone for this role who enjoys keeping their technical edge, while honing their craft & providing technical direction.

We're the Data Movement Services Lab within the Data & Machine Learning (DML) Platform, building and managing the future centralised nervous system for the Bank. The Lab runs from London and Manchester within the UK, as well as India.

Underpinning this is a large batch estate centred on IBM’s Infosphere DataStage stack. We’re in the midst of an exciting journey to modernise this capability onto Cloud technologies. Alongside this, we have a major growth area focused on streaming of data based on Confluent Kafka and where we have developed and deployed an Enterprise events hub onto cloud.

What will you focus on in this role?

You’ll be the Head of Data Engineering for this platform leading roughly 100-150 multidisciplinary staff at any one time, of which 8-12 will be direct senior management reports.  Work will be a mix of changed focused projects and business as usual activities which focus upon building data pipelines, patterns and frameworks that enable data to be processed at scale.

You’ll be a trustworthy leader who aims to inspire the technical data community and continue our growth as an organisation, both in terms of staff hiring and technical prowess.  This is a fantastic role if you're passionate about the positive power of data and engineering, you’ll have the management backing, funding & support to help make it happen!

Providing technical leadership and direction, supporting existing technical strategies and contributing towards those in the future will be another core focus.

We’re one of the most technical teams in the bank and you’ll help us to develop our data engineering community across the wider group.  You’ll be part of the broader DML engineering leadership team driving and supporting initiatives outside the core Lab and Platform.

Everything we do is underpinned by Agile working methodologies using modern DevOps practices, and we’re continuously improving.

You'll work alongside the Lab’s Product Owner in a “two-in-a-box” model to development technical roadmaps supporting the strategy of the products and services, ensuring that engineers’ capabilities are aligned to the plans.

What do we need to see in your application?

We'd welcome applicants from diverse cultural, domain and technological backgrounds and believe this is critical to success. This is a senior role in a niche area, so as a minimum to be considered for shortlisting we need to see evidence of the following in your CV;

  • Career Background: An experience technical leader with most of your career in the field of data, working at, “head of” level already.
  • Leadership:  You’ll want to be comfortable leading mixed technical teams of at least 50+ already, good mentoring/coaching skills and with a real joy for seeing people develop & succeed.
  • Experience in end-to-end delivery of software products using Agile and DevOps
  • “Hands on Mindset” - recent hands on technical skills in a relevant coding language to provide technical leadership & mentoring/coaching, but may only be hands up onto 10% in role.  A desire to be hands on and enjoy remaining hands on, honing their craft while providing technical direction.
  • Technical know-how of ETL tooling, specifically including knowledge of batch data processing AND streaming.
  • Exposure to public cloud and a strong awareness of advantages/disadvantages & the ability to provide technical leadership around the transition to cloud.  We’re platform agnostic!
