What you'll do

  • Lead the engineering teams to build and maintain high quality and reliable data solutions.
  • Own the data engineering excellence of their teams e.g., behaviours, operations, and technical quality.
  • Line manage and develop engineers to ensure they have the right skills, development plans and attitude to learning.
  • Develop effective relationships with Product, Delivery and Data Science teams to prioritise, problem solve & maximise value to market.
  • Work with the wider Data Technology function to shape the technical strategy.
  • Help develop/improve M&S standard frameworks and policies, ensuring that they are understood and adopted.
  • Drive solution through experimentation and innovation as a culture.
  • Contribute to and create team’ OKRs and demonstrate responsibility for the entire teams' objectives.
  • Drive improvement and measurement of product quality and reliability via engineering standard methodologies and metrics.
  • Drive continuous learning and improvement for the Product(s) itself.
  • Solve problems collaboratively, communicating decisions to stakeholders.
  • Approach, contribute and help lead product planning with an agile mind-set focusing on supporting our colleagues.
  • Engage with product colleagues to improve value for the customer and to understand ambiguous requirements.
  • Demonstrate and champion pragmatism in terms of commercial delivery and software quality.
  • Evangelise technology, innovation, values, and ways of working within the team and wider community.
  • Active participation and contribution to Communities of Practice with a focus on positive momentum.
  • Lead recruitment and new starter on-boarding activities.
  • Help lead initiatives to take M&S Data Engineering to the next level by challenging the status quo.

Who you are

  • Experience building and leading teams of highly skilled data engineers that deliver high-quality software.
  • Solid background in data engineering, with experience in a variety of systems and technologies.
  • Good knowledge in cloud-based data technologies and data warehousing design principles, preferably Azure.
  • Good understanding of Data Science principles.
  • Proven track record in delivering, operating, leading, hiring and pivoting.
  • Excellent people management, interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge and advocate for Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery.
  • Good understanding of testing strategies and reliability engineering.
  • Highly organised and able to manage multiple work streams, manage stakeholders and expectations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken and able to adjust for different audiences.
  • A leadership mindset that is willing to take responsibility.
  • Able to influence people at all levels and from the highly technical to non-technical.
