Why we’ve partnered with Women in data…

The Crown Estate is delighted to have become a partner of Women in Data. In what have been traditionally male dominated industries (both property and data), we are committed to creating inclusive and diverse teams across all areas of The Crown Estate. We recognise that WiD can support our goals and values and we too look forward to supporting WiD’s ambitions to level-up gender representation across the Data and STEM landscape.

How THE CROWN ESTATE see the data landscape changing in the UK in the next 5 years

Data is a key enabler of everything we do at The Crown Estate and is embedded across the business, not just in the Data and Digital teams.

Whilst we continue to improve and iterate our data foundations we strive to be at the forefront of emerging and developing technologies such as AI and GIS to both empower our workforce and provide new opportunities for our stakeholders and customers which in turn allows us to fulfil our purpose of creating shared and lasting prosperity for the nation.

ABOUT THE CROWN ESTATE

The Crown Estate is unique, with a diverse property portfolio that stretches across the country and includes urban centres; one of the largest rural holdings in the country; Regent Street and St James’s in London’s West End and Windsor Great Park. We also manage the seabed and much of the coastline around England, Wales and Northern Ireland, playing a major role in the UK’s world leading offshore wind sector. Over the last 10 years we have returned over £4bn in profit to HM Treasury for the benefit of the nation.

Expertise: Business Intelligence, Data Governance, Data Privacy, Data Strategy and Data Enablement, Business Management, People and team building and mentoring.

Education: BA in History and History of Art

I joined the Crown Estate as Director of Data Management & Governance in July 2024 after a 20-year career at Christie’s, the fine art and antique auction house. My career has developed over the years from auction management into data where I took on roles in Business Intelligence, Data Governance, Data Privacy, Data Strategy and Data Enablement.

Throughout my career, I’ve been drawn to fixing issues, making processes better and helping people make the most of themselves and their roles. Leading with empathy, transparency and pragmatism have been key principles that I work and live by.

I’m not only passionate about gender diversity in data/STEM roles but also in diversity of backgrounds – not everyone in data needs to know how to code! I have a 9 year old daughter and am very keen that she gets the same opportunities as the boys and can see people like her represented in every type of career, data, STEM or otherwise, hence why I’m involved in various women’s initiatives including WiD.

I’m excited now to be working for such an incredible organisation that is truly making a positive contribution to the nation both with the income we put back into the public purse (£1.1bn in 2024) and in our contributions towards the nation’s net zero goals. I’m proud to be a small cog in this wonderful machine and relish the opportunities my team and I can work on to make positive and lasting change.

Expertise: Marine data, offshore energy, data management, data analytics, product management

Education: MSc Applied Marine and Fisheries Ecology – University of Aberdeen, BSc Hons Marine Biology and Zoology – Bangor University

I lead The Crown Estate’s strategic approach to using marine data and creating insight and evidence to make the UK one of the most attractive and sustainable marine economies in the world; using data to drive positive impact for net zero, nature and communities.

One of my passions is to create opportunities for others and to inspire the next generation to pursue a career in the marine sector. I have been running marine internship programmes that champion diversity within the offshore sector, and I enjoy any opportunity to inspire others by raising awareness of the amazing marine life around the UK by using data to tell the story of our underwater world.

I’ve loved my career to date at The Crown Estate and have thrived in a team that supports innovation and creative thinking; constantly pushing the status quo. I’m about to head off on maternity leave for the first time and I’m excited to start the next chapter in my (home and work) life, knowing that I have a supportive employer to help me to prepare for my maternity leave, to give me the time with my family whilst I’m off on my maternity leave, and to welcome me back with flexibility, patience, forgiveness and the unpatronising expectation that I’ll continue to be the best at what I do!

Expertise: Data Visualisation, Spatial Databases, Data Management, Data Analysis, ETL

Education: MSc Geographic Information Systems – University of Portsmouth, BSc Geography – University of Portsmouth

It all started with a map.

I always had a keen interest in Geography and Technology and little did I know after being introduced to the world of GIS at University, that this is exactly the career path that I wanted to follow.

In 2022, I joined The Crown Estate, starting as a GIS Technician and now serving as a GIS Analyst. My role involves proximity checking and collaborating with stakeholders to assess spatial impacts on existing assets, potential developments, and external obligations. It was only after joining TCE that I realised the deep connection between GIS and Data & Analytics. By leveraging spatial data, we can make complex information more accessible, facilitating informed decision-making. I also learned how integral GIS is to TCE’s business processes, aiding in the management of our diverse portfolios.

As I delved deeper into the field, I became acutely aware of the gender gap in the tech and data industries. TCE is a strong advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I). Recognising this gap, The Gender Network launched a Women in STEM initiative to support, empower, and inspire women to advance their careers and build a sense of community. This initiative is something I deeply appreciate and hold close to my heart.

Education: MEng in Biomedical Engineering with Year in Industry at Rolls Royce Plc

I joined the Crown Estate in Oct 2023 as the resident Power Platform Developer responsible for designing, integrating and optimising Power Platform solutions at an enterprise level to drive efficiency and digitisation efforts across the organisation. Prior to joining The Crown Estate, I’ve always worked as a consultant where I first started out as a management consultant before pivoting to being a business and technical consultant.

Being an ethnic female in a male dominated industry, I’ve always been passionate about supporting female representation and visibility. At every organisation I’ve worked at so far, I’ve always taken an active role within STEM, diversity and inclusion efforts so similarly, I joined the Gender Network (Women in Business) here at The Crown Estate within my first few weeks and I’ve since become the Co-Chair where I can shape the strategy and direction of the network to increase the impact across the organisation and drive tangible changes.

I’ve really enjoyed my time so far at the Crown Estate. The culture here certainly lives up to the company values of Caring, Together, Creative. I’ve also had supportive leadership that cares about my development and career aspirations!

In my role at The Crown Estate, I am dedicated to sharing and embedding insights to support decision-making within this unique organisation. My team focuses on integrating transactional data with primary quantitative and qualitative data from shoppers, customers, stakeholders, and the general public. Whilst running the award-winning Insights team at Westminster Council, I set up Westminster’s Urban Lab with data scientists at Kings College and UCL and together we worked on over twenty research projects. My team was Computing Magazine ‘Big Data Team of the Year’ in 2018 for a project I led to identify ‘problematic premises’ using machine learning. Prior to Westminster, I was a spatial analyst in private consultancy, focusing on water and environment schemes in the UK and Australia. Following the Commonwealth Games in Manchester I led the analysis team at New East Manchester Ltd to evaluate the effects of £2bn public/private regeneration spending. My PhD was sponsored by the ESRC and J. Sainsbury plc to determine how to measure the performance of Town Centre Management and Business Improvement Districts. My work has been published in various journals including Environment and Planning A.

I have been supported by many wonderful women over my career and would love to pay it forward.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of living and working in numerous countries, where I have met incredible women who have profoundly influenced my life, including those at The Crown Estate. My unwavering passion for championing diversity and inclusion has been a constant in my professional journey. Having worked in large technology organizations, I recognize the immense value that women and ethnic diversity bring to fostering innovation and developing unique problem-solving approaches.

At The Crown Estate, I serve as the Executive Sponsor for the Gender Network, advocating for women’s needs in the workplace. Additionally, I established our first STEM group to ensure we are cultivating future capabilities and leadership in this critical area.

I am thrilled about our new partnership with Women in Data and eagerly anticipate the positive impact it will have as we advance our journey in technology and data for the greater societal good.
