Spotlight on Cecilia Liao

Name: Cecilia Liao
Job title: Data Science Manager
Expertise: Applying customer data science to solve business challenges of data-driven retailers
Education: BA in Psychology, MSc in International Finance and Investments

Cecilia leads a team of data scientists to develop innovative analytics solutions and products for dunnhumby’s clients. Her love of data is evident from hands-on experience dealing with different types of data, spanning across several fields and industries including finance and banking, retail transactions, open government data, and consumer surveys.

Outside of work, Cecilia is a volunteer organiser for PyData London, a forum consisting of monthly meetups and annual conferences that connect Python users in the ever-evolving fields of data management, processing, analytics, and visualisation.

As co-chair for the most recent PyData London conference, she coordinated a 3-day conference of talks and tutorials for over 500 attendees. The event not only inspired attendees to do more (be it with data or sharing what they know from working with data) but also raised substantial funds to support open-source projects sponsored by NumFocus, including those used in analytics such as Jupyter and pandas library for Python.

Cecilia has recently been appointed as a trustee to the UK Python Association, a charity with the mission of advancing the awareness and education of the Python language. She is excited by the opportunity to expand her philanthropic work and make an even greater impact in the fast-changing world of data and analytics.

Spotlight on Sandra Stanley

Name: Sandra Stanley
Job title: Head of Customer Knowledge UK & Ireland
Expertise: A Customer Analytics specialist with nearly 20 years’ experience using data, statistics and insight to drive business strategy and marketing to transform relationships with customers and business success.
Education: First class honours degree in Mathematics and MSc in Statistics with Applications in Medicine

Sandra leads a busy team of 75+ analysts, researchers and data scientists who provide the most complete understanding of shopper attitudes, emotions, motivators and behaviours to help our clients provide a better customer experience and outperform the competition.

Her early career gave her a solid grounding in the principles of data science, at a time when the analyst’s skills and knowledge, not technology, was the key differentiator. She has developed as an analyst and leader, embracing all that technology has to offer and building the code and algorithms that power our solutions. In the process, she’s become a thought leader in customer-first analytics.

Last year, Sandra recognised the need to modernise analytics within her team and after securing board level backing has led a complete transformation. Sandra has transitioned data science from within a research and innovation team to the centre of the analysis team and thus the business, bringing new technologies, techniques and algorithms to everyday work.

Sandra’s impact goes beyond hard business metrics. She has had a long-term influence in areas which contribute to dunnhumby being a great employer. She has championed diversity and equal opportunities – such as granting new fathers extended leave, creating the case for the first job share, supporting the women in business programme, taking part in STEM careers activities and using fair recruitment to create a 41% female team in a male dominated sector.

Sandra is an outstanding role model for all female employees across dunnhumby and the data community. She balances a high-profile, transformative role with taking care of her two young children.

Spotlight on Shikha Tara

Name: Shikha Tara
Job Title: Analysis Director, dunnhumby India
Expertise: Strong expertise across pricing, promotions and category solutions for the retailers, along with robust business perspective and the proximity to data and delivery
Education: M.A. Economics

I joined the field of analytics soon after graduating. Even though it was a completely new area for me, I found it exciting as I was learning a lot of new interesting things professionally from coding and insights generation to name but a few.

However, a challenge which I soon encountered during the early stages of my career was the lack of role models. I wasn’t aware of the real potential and probable career graph that a woman can have in the world of analytics. You can’t be what you can’t see – so it became a little tough to pave my own path.

This has led to my motivation to be that role model – the someone who I needed for inspiration at the early stages of my career. I am driven by the idea of filling the vacuum which I faced. This makes me put in extra effort each day and I firmly believe that you can influence others only by example and not by advice, so I keep learning new things, work with different clients and teams to increase my repertoire of knowledge and experiences.

During my time at dunnhumby I have opted for the more challenging roles rather than the convenient ones, picking smaller teams and expanding them instead of preferring the usual route of working for settled big teams. I have thoroughly enjoyed my journey, and this has helped me to pave my own path while helping myself to turn my imperfections into learnings and growth.

If you are diligent and share all aspects of your journey honestly with others, you may inspire many young entrants, especially women.

My mantra is to be true to my values and to be authentic. The aim is not just to survive but to thrive.

How dunnhumby sees the data landscape changing in the UK in the next 5 years

We see the data landscape becoming increasingly underpinned by the tension between legal and privacy evolution and the increased sophistication enabled by improved data management and science technologies and techniques. Put simply: it is becoming easier and easier to identify, predict and influence behaviour using a broader and richer set of data, while legislation is constraining and introducing further barriers and safeguards to that utilization. Therefore the concept of data ownership becomes more critical and we can expect to see companies ranging from the big tech giants through to start ups working harder to both acquire and legitimize data. This puts companies with a large base of permitted data usage at a distinct advantage but only provided they can retain that permission by demonstrating the value to individuals provisioning that permission.
