Diversity Equity & Inclusion

“Diversity, Equity & Inclusion foster innovation and resilience and enable us to act braver and better.”

Embracing the power of DEI is at the core of who we are.

We believe in the power of being different

Our understanding of diversity encompasses the full range of individual differences. We recognise diversity can be multi-dimensional, intersectional, and complex, so we want to build a diverse workforce that includes a wide range of racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender identities; economic and geographic backgrounds; physical abilities; ages; life, school, and career experiences; and political, religious, and personal beliefs.

We are committed to building an equitable and inclusive work environment where this diversity is celebrated, valued, and has equitable opportunities to succeed.

In our day-to-day dealings with each other, we want to foster an inclusive working climate in which the differences and commonalities among our staff are both valued and appreciated.

We celebrate the diverse voices of our people across the world. We design development programmes, build our teams and cultivate leaders in the spirit of an inclusive culture where every person can grow, feel safe and be the best they can be. Diversity fuels innovation. When different perspectives, experiences and ways of thinking come together they spark ideas. This creative force brings forth solutions that drive progress in our industry and help us answer the questions society and the world are facing today and tomorrow.

At Munich Re we see DEI as a business imperative which promotes the acceptance and value of differences between our employees. Together, we benefit from those differences in achieving Munich Re’s strategic goals and objectives and serving our clients, investors, communities and stakeholders.

Education: Post-graduate in Business Intelligence

As a Business Intelligence Analyst at MRdB, my role is to give support to CM area. Also, I collaborate in 2 teams composed of people from different areas and offices to develop tools and analysis to aid data-driven decisions due to the unique EU/LA4 organization in Mission Teams (Agile Methodology).
What I enjoy the most about working with data is that it helps us answer questions and allows me to do very different tasks: prepare the material for a strategy workshop and automatically perform checks from bordereaux (excel) by using Databricks, PowerBI, Dataiku and tools available for the group (e.g. BDI).

When I first started working in consulting, I had too many questions, but little knowledge. Then, I discovered PowerBI and ways to extract and handle large datasets. Nowadays, I have more experience and freedom to select the right questions, plan and just do whatever I need to do.
The data environment is mostly made up of men, but that also means we can view things from other angles. One of the best advices I have ever received is to not be intimidated and voice my opinion because it is very valuable.

Expertise: Geospatial Data Analysis, Data Processing, Automation and Integration

Education: MSc. in Agricultural Engineering

As a Data Scientist at Munich RE, I leverage data to drive business efficiency and innovation. Throughout my career, I developed a passion for building applications that integrates satellite data into agricultural decision-making processes, utilizing my expertise in geospatial data analysis. My journey here, is marked by helping to design and build a system to measure agricultural risk that improved our relationship with clients by enhancing their portfolio quality and reducing adverse selection issues. This system was built by creating data pipelines that utilized satellite data from the across Brazil to measure socioenvironmental historical variability.

Now, I’m focused on identifying and integrating automation opportunities at Munich RE do Brazil, where I apply my technical skills to streamline processes, optimize workflows and drive business value. With a strong foundation in geospatial applications and experience with cloud platforms like Azure, Google, and AWS, I have become a versatile Data Scientist and a Developer. I’m proud to be part of a community that promotes women’s participation in data and look forward to inspiring others to pursue careers in this field.

As a Casualty & Financial Lines Underwriter, my role is within the customer data management area. My responsibilities include analysing and reviewing financial statement data, applying rates and ratios for risk assessment.

As part of a client’s financial analysis, I work with financial metrics that may indicate critical issues or highlight the client’s solidity, establishing the degree of liability risk.

My experience and typical day include looking at a client’s business from a 360-degree perspective, analysing performance, financial solvency of a client, risk areas and preventive measures taken by the client, risk assessment and finally quoting at the right premium for the exposure.

I started and grew – while finishing my degree in Finance – as a Financial Lines Underwriter, working for some well-known American primary insurance companies, to then move towards the world of reinsurance where I began to work on large accounts, both in the financial lines and casualty areas.

Since I started at just 22 years old, I have always had the burden of demonstrating the experience gained. The company’s dedication to continuous self-improvement taught me that I could achieve anything with the right dedication and approach.

Nine years of consolidated experience after, I am having the chance – thanks to Munich Re – to see different markets and clients of countries with mindset completely different from mine and cooperate with international colleagues, keeping at my side the solid roots from where I began.

I am currently a Principal Data Scientist at Aviva leading a small team of data scientists. My role involves collaborating with stakeholders in pricing and underwriting to understand how data can be used to solve a wide range of business problems. My job is varied and never boring, and it encompasses data analysis, predictive modelling, project management and data governance. There is always something new to learn as data science is a rapidly evolving field.

My academic journey began unconventionally; I left school at 16 without higher-level qualifications. Twelve years later, I pursued a Mathematics degree at the University of East Anglia as a mature student, then went on to gain a PhD in pure mathematics. After a year of teaching at secondary school, I joined Aviva as a statistical analyst. Over nearly two decades, I have held four different roles within the company.

During my career I have seen that women are under-represented in technical roles not just in Aviva but across all industries. I am excited to be the Recruitment Lead for our Women in Data SteerCo and to encourage more women to pursue careers in data roles.

Outside of work I am very much an outdoors person enjoying endurance sports such as triathlon and ultra-running, and I also have an allotment. These activities help me to switch off and clear my mind so that I can return to work with renewed focus.

What is it you enjoy the most working with data?

I have a curious mind and I enjoy trying to find patterns in the data which help explain or predict certain trends

As an AWS-certified Machine Learning Specialist, I have a strong passion for delivering impactful data-driven solutions. In my role at Aviva, I lead key projects within the Counter fraud space, focusing on developing machine learning pipelines, automating workflows, and driving sustainable data practices that enhance efficiency and collaboration. Outside of work, I am committed to empowering others through mentorship and have founded a community that supports tech professionals in navigating their careers.

What is it you enjoy the most working with data?

I love the thrill of uncovering hidden insights and solving complex problems through data. Working with data allows me to connect the dots between raw information and impactful business decisions, driving innovation and improving processes.

The ability to turn numbers into stories and solutions is what excites me the most!

When I was at secondary school, my dad bought me a copy of Fermat’s Last Theorem by Simon Singh. This book made me re-examine what I thought I knew – Maths can actually be fun! I can get a job solving puzzles in real life!

After graduating with a PhD in Maths, I have spent many enjoyable years working both as a post doctorate in the research sector and at various levels of data scientist in the insurance industry at Aviva. And in both roles, I was doing just that. Solving real-life puzzles that make a huge difference to stakeholders and customers. From examining the inner workings of plant-microbial interactions, to optimising the claims process at Aviva.

As a female, I’ve become quite accustomed on this journey to being a minority in the room, and having to shout that little bit louder to get my voice heard. I’ve taken on increasing leadership responsibility and am loving my current role as Principal Data Scientist, where I get to lead a team of data scientists, who all likewise love solving complex problems and seeing what they can achieve.

What is it you enjoy the most working with data?

I love how data has the power to truly revolutionise the customer experience, from enhancing our workforce to streamlining the way we do business. Technology moves so fast and this keeps me constantly engaged, as I strategise on how to harness these opportunities to stay competitive and deliver the best for our customers.

I also find great joy in inspiring others to excel in this dynamic environment and to develop their own creative solutions. As a mother of three inspirational girls, I am particularly committed to encouraging more women and girls to enter the field, ensuring they feel welcomed and valued. Promoting STEM subjects to the younger generation is a cause that is very close to my heart. Just like my dad all those years ago, I just adore planting those seeds and watching them grow.
