Digital with Purpose.

Are you interested in shaping strategy and supporting the mission to deliver exceptional Management (MI) products and services?

Do you want to collect and manage a vast array of data which is used by the Secretary of State?

DWP Digital is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join our MI team who provide the strategic capability for MI reporting and visualisations across DWP.

DWP is the UK's largest government department, every year we pay over £195 billion to over 20 million UK Citizens.

DWP services cover everything from helping children & families right through to supporting relatives of lost loved ones.

We help people find jobs, support people financially when they are unable to work due to health conditions and make ensure everybody has the money they need to live during their retirement years.

The scale of what we do is outstanding, and our purpose is unique. We'd love you to join us.

Tell me more about the position:

Working with modern cloud environments and a mix of legacy on-premises technologies, you’ll help develop the DWP Data Engineering Strategy for MI products and services that enables the department to gain insight and make more informed choices. The work is fast paced with a large and growing portfolio of MI products built upon hundreds of data sets.

You’ll focus on back-end data processes to support MI reporting, rather than visualisation work. This role has an emphasis on data engineering technical leadership – you’ll lead other data engineers in terms of direction setting and their technical knowledge and capability.

You will steer the data engineering function within a wider product team. There will be lots of connecting and interaction with stakeholders – you’ll work closely with product and delivery managers, business analysts and data scientists.

You’ll also manage a small team of data engineers and oversee specialist contractor data engineers. You will explore new ideas and support your team in developing their technical and interpersonal skills.

Your time will roughly be split 40% hands-on data engineering and 60% leadership, strategy and management.

DWP Digital is a great place to work, we offer a supportive and inclusive environment where you can grow your career and make a real difference.

Essential criteria

  • Technical leadership – you have experience advising on technology and standards, setting direction, building and maintaining networks and collaborating across teams with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • You have a deep understanding of AWS, Azure, Athena, EMR processing, relational & non-relational databases, and understand how these fit into the wider technical landscape
  • You have experience designing, coding and testing data solutions of medium to high complexity within an enterprise-governed process
  • You have experience building team capability through role modelling, mentoring and coaching

Details. Wages. Perks.

You’ll join us based at one of our brilliant digital hubs in either Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle or Sheffield https://careers.dwp.gov.uk/our-locations/

We also have all the tools and tech we need to enable our people to work flexibly.

We operate a hybrid working model with a mix of home working and some time in the office.

In return for your skills, we offer a competitive salary of up to £63,517. There is also a Digital Allowance of up to £15,000 per annum available for exceptional candidates.

You'll be eligible for a brilliant civil service pension with employer contributions worth 28.97%.

You'll get a generous leave package starting at 26 days, plus all the usual bank holidays, and the option to take extra days off on flexi leave.

We also have a broad benefits package built around your work-life balance which includes:

  • Flexible working, flexi hours and flexi days
  • Hybrid working: some time in a hub with the team, some time at home
  • Family-friendly policies
  • Time off volunteering and charitable giving
  • Bring your authentic self to work with 'I Can Be Me in DWP'
  • Discounts and savings on shopping, fun days out and more
  • Interest-free loans to buy a bike or a season ticket
  • Sports and social activities
  • Working in an award-winning environment and culture
  • Professional development, coaching, mentoring and career progression opportunities.

Please note this role requires you to pass Security Check clearance.
