JOB TITLE: Head of Data Engineering - PEC

SALARY: £130,000 - £195,000

LOCATION(S): London or Bristol

HOURS: [Full-time]

WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week currently, or 40% of our time, at our London or Bristol Office

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Data Engineering leader to work within the Personalised Experiences and Communications Platform to join product engineering cross functional teams. As a head of data your responsibilities will be delivering the highest quality data capability, drawing upon your engineering expertise, whilst being open minded to the opportunities the cloud provides.

 

Here’s where you’ll make a difference:

  • Lead the data engineering teams in designing, developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining high-quality, high-availability and scalable data pipelines and data products to provide personalised experiences for our twenty-six million customers and users.
  • Establish and enforce best practices, standards, and methodologies for data engineering, ensuring alignment with our business goals, customer needs, and industry trends.
  • Collaborate with product managers, data engineers, data scientists, AI engineers, and other stakeholders to define and prioritise the data engineering roadmap, scope, and deliverables.
  • Lead implementation of a data strategy aligned to the group’s data strategy.
  • Lead teams to define and deliver consumption patterns, data linage and data models and contracts.
  • Lead teams to create automation tools for data reconciliation and curation.
  • Drive the culture of delivering highly secured and high-quality data products.
  • Take the ownership and accountability of delivery, operations, risk management and TCO.
  • Lead teams in adopting best engineering practices like Test Driven Development, code reviews, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery for data pipelines.
  • Hire, train, coach, and evaluate the performance of the software engineering team, developing their skills and career growth.
  • Being a team player who can build relationships and collaborate productively with other teams across a variety of domains.

Specifically, we are looking for people who have….

We understand no one can be an expert in every aspect of Data Engineering. However, if you have coding or scripting knowledge / experience with a data engineering background, we would like to hear from you.

  • Proven experience in software engineering, with experience in a leadership role.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related field.
  • Hands-on proven experience of delivering systems design, software development, testing and operational stability.
  • Proven experience and knowledge of automation and CI/CD
  • Advanced knowledge of agile methodologies.
  • Best practice coding/scripting experience developed in a commercial/industry setting (Python, SQL, Java, Scala or Go).
  • Working experience with operational data stores, data warehouse, big data technologies and data lakes (Teradata DW, BigQuery)
  • Experience working with relational and non-relational databases to build data solutions, such as SQL Server/Oracle/Teradata, experience with relational and dimensional data structures.
  • Experience in using distributed frameworks (Spark, Flink, Beam, Hadoop)
  • Practical experience of Cloud native solutions, specially GCP
  • Advanced knowledge of containers (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Strong experience working with Kafka technologies.
  • Computer science fundamentals: a clear understanding of data structures, algorithms, software design, design patterns and core programming concepts.
  • Good understating of cloud storage, networking, and resource provisioning
  • Experience of hiring and recognising and developing talents
