What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?
- Academic background in Data Science, Maths, Statistics or Computer Science or equivalent Data Science-related business experience.
- Experience of writing code in R, Python or SQL.
- Hands-on experience using data science to solve problems or improve established processes.
- Stakeholder management skills and experience working with colleagues to understand their requirements and deliver complex analytical projects in a timely manner.
- Being proactive in recognising opportunities to use Data Science to contribute to team or wider organisational priorities.
You and your role
As a Data Scientist, you will be working on advanced analytics, including machine learning, network analytics, natural language processing, using python and SQL along with coding best practice to develop extensible and re-usable codebases.
You'll also be collaborating with the wider Data Science and Data community, championing best practice and driving innovation and AI literacy across the organisation.
Your primary stakeholders will include the Design & Build and Strategy teams that support the Universal Credit programme, but you’ll also work closely with members of the Data Practice across DWP.

Location: You’ll join us in one of our brilliant digital hubs in Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Sheffield, whichever is most convenient for you.
Hybrid Working: We work a hybrid model – you'll spend some time working at home and sometime collaborating face to face in a hub.
Pay: We offer pay of up to £55,091.
Pension: You’ll get a brilliant civil service pension with employer contributions worth 28.97%, worth up to £12,345 per year.
Holidays: A generous leave package starting at 26 days and rising to 31 days over time.
You can also take up to 3 extra days off a month on flexi-time. You’ll also get all the usual public holidays.
