JMAN Group is a fast-growing data engineering & data science consultancy. We work primarily with Private Equity Funds and their Portfolio Companies to create commercial value using Data & Artificial Intelligence. In addition, we also work with growth businesses, large corporates, multinationals, and charities.
We are headquartered in London with Offices in New York, London and Chennai. Our team of 320+ people is a unique blend of individuals with skills across commercial consulting, data science and software engineering. We were founded by cousins Anush Newman (Co-founder & CEO) and Leo Valan (Co-founder & CTO) and have grown rapidly since 2019. In May 2023 we took a minority investment from Baird Capital and in January 2024 we opened an office in New York with the ambition of growing our US business to be as large as, if not bigger than, our European business by 2027.
Our US team is currently 10 people. We will continue to grow our US office rapidly from a combination of local hiring and transfers from our London & Chennai offices. We are looking for ambitious, numerous, bright, self-motivated individuals excited to work for a high growth company in an exciting, fast paced, high performance environment. Whilst we’re currently a start-up in the US, we’re backed by a strong team across Chennai and London. This means that, as a seed member of the US team, you will have the opportunity to influence how we grow and scale, whilst also needing to take responsibility for ensuring the WIFI works, and we have coffee for our guests. Globally, we encourage an ownership mentality in everything we do, regardless of your role or grade.
Position
As a Principal, you will have a growing role in thought leadership, team mentoring, business development, and will work with Managers to embed a culture of delivery excellence in line with JMAN values throughout the business.
You will focus on building client relationships that are strong and lasting. As a trusted partner and subject matter expert, clients will seek your advice on business issues that extend beyond the immediate scope of a project, and you therefore take a big-picture approach to solving the clients’ broader issues, which helps them define the strategic direction of their organisations and solidifies JMAN as an ‘embedded partner’.
You will lead, enthuse, and develop teams across the business during project delivery and day to day work. You will continue to contribute to project delivery through input and quality assurance, and by providing steer to Managers as they run project delivery. This includes driving knowledge sharing across the business to drive delivery excellence.
In summary, the primary focus of all our consulting team is to deliver high calibre commercial and technical solutions for our clients across our 4 core solutions: Core Reporting, Value Creation, Prep for Exit and Data Due Diligence. We operate on a ‘sell and serve’ model, and as such, you will be recognised for both selling and delivering work.
Key responsibilities for Principals include:
- Business Development: This is a revenue-generating role and as such you will develop and lead client relationships with both Private Equity Funds and their Portfolio businesses. Expected to both identify and create new business opportunities as well as develop ‘embedded partnerships’ with more established clients. This includes responsibility for the production of high-quality bids and proposals which win work. In addition, you will support in business development initiatives that raise JMAN’s company profile through participating in networking and marketing events, such as attending or speaking at conferences, or producing media articles for publication.
- Project Delivery: You will continue to generate billable revenue for the company through personal delivery across projects as well as overseeing delivery of multiple client projects simultaneously. Each project team will typically be led by a Manager or Senior Consultant (25-100% allocation) with a mix of Commercial and Engineering team members (typically 100% allocated to a project). While the project team will lead on day-to-day delivery the Principal is ultimately responsible for overall project delivery and success. You will set expectations, enthuse and empower teams, whilst providing guidance on project direction where needed. Delivery is our strongest sales tool.
- Client Relationships: Maintaining and setting the standard for excellence in client communication and relationship management, you will build relationships with clients that are strong and lasting, being seen as a partner and trusted expert. You demonstrate strong communication skills with the ability to convey strategic roadmaps to senior stakeholders, always managing expectations and ‘setting the scene’ of what is possible. You anticipate client questions and perspectives, ready to offer sound solutions.
- Commercial Management: You understand, monitor and take responsibility for P+L delivery across projects, including ongoing monitoring of project profitability/leakage. You will actively contribute to lead generation activities, tracking pipeline activity correctly to ensure effective budget forecasting.
- Centre of Excellence: Develop, contribute and be part of the leadership team for one or more of JMAN’s commercial centres of excellence (CoE). (E.g. For Value Creation work – develop commercial offering, actively contribute to thought leadership and R&D, lead delivery of more advanced analytical projects, train and upskilling more junior colleagues in Machine Learning, AI and other advanced analytics techniques.)
- Team management: As s Development Manager for an allocated number of more junior team members, you will support, guide and coach them in their career at JMAN. We believe that JMAN should be the ‘passport to your future’ and we take personal development – and the development of others – as integral to our growth.
- Internal development and communication: Contribute to the development of internal structures and best practices within JMAN (e.g. Strategy, Recruitment, People development, Social etc) to support our growth without compromising on our quality. You will work with the Associate Partners and the wider leadership team to understand the overarching strategy and develop plans to make this happen on the ground, including how this is communicated to the wider business.
- Culture: We wholeheartedly believe in our values as being key to our success, not just a ‘nice to have’ on the wall. You will drive our culture as an ambassador for JMAN and a leader in our team. As such, you will be expected to act as a role model in behaviour and attitude, staying true to our values both internally with our team and externally with Clients.
Note: Principals may ‘spike’ in different areas. For example, some may be more commercially oriented, where others are more delivery / CoE focussed (in particular if they have experience in ML / AI and other Advanced Analytical techniques), knowing that our best sales come from strong delivery of projects. There is no one-sizefits-all approach, but at the same time we don’t believe that a role such as this is binary. We expect that you will manage your time and focus as you see fit in order to meet the goals that we set as individuals and as a team.
Requirements
- You have an excellent academic background and strong quantitative ability.
- You have 8+ years professional experience ideally with material exposure to two or more of Data Science, Private Equity and Management Consulting (with a focus on more quantitative work)
- You have been a ‘high performer’ in previous professional roles and can demonstrate this, possibly through having progressed / been promoted faster than your peers.
- You demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think about a problem from first principles. You are agile and adaptable.
- Data science experience (e.g. Machine Learning / AI focussed PhD or a heavy statistical element to a PhD or worked in a previous Data Science role) and knowledge of analytical tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Alteryx, Python, R etc is beneficial (and a requirement for delivery focussed hires) but not required.
- Able to cope well with a high degree of ambiguity, you are comfortable in the uncomfortable.
- You are ambitious, thoughtful, and not afraid to voice your opinion in a respectful way (e.g. Suggest a change in how the business could be run or voice an idea on how we could improve how we deliver a project).
- You display a high level of self-awareness and take ownership of your personal development areas. You are open to constructive feedback and willing to learn in order to grow.
- You are a self-starter and happy to do whatever is required to help grow our US office (from attending conferences, developing new client relationships, delivering advanced data science projects, helping with recruitment, or occasionally taking the trash out)

- $200,000 p.a. base salary
