We are seeking a curious and collaborative data engineer (maternity cover) to join our data operations team and help our data science, analytics and product development teams develop exceptional products and services.

This role is critical to deliver ICIS's mission to deliver world class Data and Analytics solutions to our clients. You will be responsible for delivering well designed and quality data products to Data Science and Analytics colleagues. At the heart of the role is the ability to delight your internal customers, always listening to feedback and delivering solutions quickly and efficiently. As a senior engineer, you will also be responsible for coaching and developing other Data Engineers in the team.

Key responsibilities 

  • Ownership of assigned data products, including data model design, end-to-end data pipeline delivery, data product quality monitoring, requirements analysis and issue resolution.
  • Continuous engagement with Data Science and Analytics colleagues to understand requirements for our data-assets.
  • Strong customer focus and data-driven mindset
  • Identify process improvements that enable efficient delivery and maintenance.
  • Openness to learning and managing new technologies as business requirements change.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • A team player who works collaboratively, keen to learn and share knowledge with others.
  • Good understanding of coding best practices and design patterns.
  • Experience with code and data versioning, code quality and optimisation, error handling, logging, monitoring, validation, and alerting.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines to analyse, build, test and deploy the code.
  • High level of attention to detail, the ability to think architecturally at ‘big picture’ and able to translate this into practical implementation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: role will require engagement with a varied and senior stakeholder base.
  • Detail orientated with strong problem-solving skills and innovative thinking.
  • Experience in partnering with a diverse team in multiple locations.

Technical

  • Used to working closely with data scientists and analysts and comfortable with rapid prototyping e.g., shipping beta products.
  • Strong proficiency with data manipulation language including optimization techniques - SQL preferred, Snowflake experience is a plus, knowledge of OLTP DB's a plus.
  • Strong understanding of normalized/dimensional data modelling principles - Dimensional or Vault methodologies preferred.
  • Experience working in cloud environment - AWS preferred.
  • Expertise in development language - Python preferred.
  • Familiar with popular data science tools and deployment methods e.g., Databricks, Docker etc.
  • Strong knowledge in Industry data engineering best practices
  • Knowledge in using and developing in applicable toolsets e.g., frameworks, stored procedures etc.
  • Ability to interface competently with data science and analytics users to finalize requirements.
  • Knowledge of test-driven development
  • Ability to write and review portions of detailed specifications for the development of complex system components.
  • Understanding of automation/other tools to increase efficiency.
  • Strong problem solving and research skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve process inefficiencies (e.g., bugs) in the repository.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Basic knowledge of web-technologies (FTP, REST, SOAP, XML, etc.)
  • Release management

Domain Specific

  • Knowledge of energy or chemical industries a plus but not essential
  • Knowledge and experience of Data Engineering, explicitly for the purposes of Data Science and Analytics
  • A preference for speed to market over technical perfection

What is the working pattern like?

ICIS believes in the flexibility of homeworking, but also in the value of face-to-face collaboration. While we do not mandate the number of days or specific days in the office, there will sometimes be a need to go in more often and the office is open every day for anyone who wants to work there. The ICIS office is based on Bishopsgate in the heart of the City. The building is close to Liverpool Street and Moorgate station and has cycle parking and showers. The office space includes a kitchen area, a rooftop terrace, free tea and coffee and even a table-football table! At ICIS we believe in maintaining a good work-life balance by ‘working smarter, not harder‘, and our working pattern and culture reflects this.
