Data Engineer

Job Description
At Lloyds Banking Group (LBG), we’re motivated by a clear purpose - to Help Britain both recover and prosper. And as the UK's largest digital, retail and commercial bank our colleagues are passionate about making a difference to customers and communities.
We’ve achieved so much in recent years, and we’ll continue to be the UK’s leading lender of mortgages, cards, loans and car finance and leasing. This strength – packaged in our powerful online presence and strong brands – is the core of our Consumer Lending business.
By taking a more integrated, data-led approach to lending we can better understand our customers as individuals – offering them the financial services they need, wherever they are on life’s journey.
This is where you come in - we have a new opportunity to join the Customer Affordability & Data team within Consumer Lending, as a Data Engineer.
The Role:
This is a phenomenal opportunity to join our team. You'll be working in a collaboratively driving effort to build, support and improve our data software, all while working closely with our Consumer Lending Platform and Group Engineering teams which will provide exciting new challenges.
You'll be responsible for the design, curation, improvement and manipulation of data in operational and analytics databases including the resolution of existent issues. An understanding of Big Data solutions, preferably with hands-on experience building both batch and real-time data pipelines within scalable distributed environments.
About you:
A strong track record delivered on a real production platform is a must, as are a “can-do” attitude, capability of bootstrapping projects, and ability to effectively work with multi-disciplinary, internal and external distributed teams across the project lifecycle.
We're also looking for strong DevOps/SRE background and deep knowledge of automated builds, code quality metrics etc. You're a data professional who understands and acknowledges the impact of system design decisions on scalability, resilience and supportability.
Plus you’ll need to show a real passion for developing new solutions and translating data into analytics based opportunities - role-modelling Data Engineering as it should be in the new digital age.
Essential skills and experience
- Deep and broad understanding of Scala (or Java/Kotlin)
- Extensive experience of Hadoop-based technologies (particularly Spark, Hive, Hbase, Yarn/Oozie)
- Experience with one or more Cloud Services (GCP, AWS, Azure)
- Distributed version control (Git preferred)
- Significant experience of agile development practices – TDD, BDD, automated builds, continuous integration, tooling to monitor code quality
Highly Desirable
- Use of message passing architectures (Kafka, pub/sub, MQ series, Rabbit MQ)
- Experience with Python / Jython / Cpython / PyPy
- Knowledge of modern Java alternatives (Golang or Rust)
- Containers and container orchestration (Docker/Kubernetes)
Location & Ways of working:
Our team is spread across Chester and London. We work in a hybrid model, splitting our time between the office and working from home. Our "anchor" day in the office is Wednesday, for all our team to meet and collaborate as needed.
We embrace flexible working styles and encourage every team member to play a part in the culture, making it a great place to work.
What we can offer you in return:
In addition to the competitive base salary you'll also receive:
- Discretionary annual group performance share bonus
- Access to our Flexible Benefits scheme, with the option to select from a range of products and benefits, linked to Lifestyle, Health & Wellbeing, and Financial Protection
- Generous employer pension contribution up to 15%
- Private medical health cover
