Why we’ve partnered with Women in data…

bp’s ambition is to represent the world around us, creating a culture of belonging and making a positive contribution to the societies and communities where we operate.  Partnering with Women In Data, and focusing on gender parity, takes us a step closer towards our goal for female representation to have 40% women group leaders and 35% women senior level leaders by 2025. We want all our people to know that they can be themselves at work every day. Attracting the best and brightest talent starts with equity and inclusion – for everyone.

How bp Trading & Shipping sees the data landscape changing in the UK in the next 5 years

The commodity trading data landscape is complex, characterized by a diverse spectrum of structured and unstructured data types spanning a range of update frequencies, from real-time to monthly intervals. Pricing data—spot, futures, and options prices—are highly dynamic, with instantaneous updates reflecting global economic indicators and geopolitical events. Physical data on commodity production and movement, such as oil output levels and agricultural yield forecasts, require consideration of weather patterns, political stability, and technological advancements in extraction and farming techniques. Transactional data, such as vessel positions, trade volumes, and inventory levels, require continuous analysis to effectively identify and predict market trends, while consumer behaviours, news feeds, mortgage approvals, and flight bookings contribute to this multifaceted domain.

As the global economy grows more interconnected, the volume and variety of data influencing commodity markets are expected to grow. The capacity to efficiently and securely store, manage, and interpret this data—in near real-time—is paramount. Enhanced analysis through the increased application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) will enable more nuanced predictions and efficient risk management. The evolving digital infrastructure must be both agile and robust, enabling traders to leverage this wealth of information in an increasingly complex market landscape.

Aramide grew up in Lagos, Nigeria and moved to the UK for sixth form ten years ago. Moving continents alone as a teenager could have been daunting, but she reflects that at the time, she was mostly excited for the new adventure – and getting to shop with next day delivery!

Aramide first joined bp on a summer internship placement – which was where she got her first exposure to data science. She admits to not expecting to enjoy it as much as she did, but that was the beginning of a new love. After completing her university degree, Aramide rejoined bp as part of the Analytics Graduate Development Program, which she has since completed. She feels very fortunate to have found a role where she gets to do stimulating work in an environment which supports her to be curious, try new things, and keep growing.

Outside work, Aramide enjoys reading fantasy novels, playing video games, (shopping…,) and spending time with her family!
