Why we’ve partnered with Women in data…

At AXA UK we recognise that we can only truly understand and meet the needs of our customers if our people are representative of our customer base.

Our collaboration with Women in Data supports our commitment to foster an environment where individuals from all backgrounds have the opportunity to thrive. Through this partnership, we aim to actively support and empower women in our data team, addressing gender imbalances and promoting inclusion.

We recognise that women are significantly underrepresented in data-related roles and this partnership is part of a broader effort to support women in achieving prosperous careers, taking on leadership roles, and fostering a balanced workforce.

We’re also committed to addressing the gender imbalance at its root by encouraging young females into STEM subjects and pursuing careers in data.

What does the data & AI landscape look like in 5 years?

Insurance is an industry that is undergoing a transformation with the use of data and AI; finely balancing the adoption of technological advancements while upholding rigorous regulatory and governance standards.

We’re equipping our people with enhanced data capabilities to automate and augment processes with the aim to elevate productivity and efficiency and ultimately enhance the customer experience.

Technology is amplifying the change in customer needs, pushing insurers to shift from reactive practices to more predictive and proactive actions to anticipate and meet customer demand at a faster pace.

This transformation will usher in a new era of hyper-personalised insurance, where cutting-edge AI applications will combat fraud, streamline claims processing, and enable real-time integration of enhanced risk factors for precise and individualised pricing.

Cali’s data journey commenced as an analyst, leveraging her scientific academic background studying a degree in biochemistry. Joining AXA in 2014, she formed part of a small team in customer analytics, challenging the traditional insurance landscape to recognise the significance of customer insights and segmentation in a data-intensive, pricing-driven environment.

Her tenure at NatWest Group further developed her expertise in enabling her to bridge the gap between business needs and data analytics solutions. Returning to AXA, she assumed a pivotal role in driving data strategy and championing data culture within the Retail operating company, channelling her strategic acumen and leadership qualities to support her colleagues in their data learning transformation.

Currently leading Data Culture & Capability across the entire UK business, Cali is dedicated to unlocking the true value of data through AXA’s people. Her commitment extends beyond providing the data professional community with the skills to operate industry-leading tools and platforms to ensuring that the entire organisation is empowered with data literacy and confidence to drive informed, data-driven decisions and enhance customer outcomes.

Cali’s ambition to improve gender balance within the UK teams underscores her dedication to fostering a more inclusive and diverse data community. Her active involvement in female mentorship programmes reflects her passion for championing women in data careers and encouraging the many women with exceptional leadership qualities into leadership roles.

Bronnie Davies is a Lead Data Scientist at AXA Insurance working for the retail insurance business to develop machine-learning models to address a range of business problems. Recently, she has also been involved in the prompt engineering for a strategic generative AI project. Throughout her career, she has often helped deliver data science upskilling programmes aimed at a range of people from Graduate Data Scientists to business stakeholders.

Whilst completing her MSc in Data Science & Analytics at Cardiff University she began an internship with the International Pricing team at Admiral Insurance and ultimately joined the team as a Graduate Data Scientist. She went on to become the EU Data & Analytics Academy Lead helping to support the department through a cloud transformation and the necessary upskilling.

Bronnie has found attending Women in Data events such a positive experience and is excited for more engagement with them following the partnership with AXA.

Bronnie lives in the Brecon Beacons and likes to spend as much time outside as possible. She recently started volunteering to help run her local tennis club.”

Sam’s journey in AXA started as a Wellness Intelligence Analyst which involved looking at client’s data across the AXA Health services to give insight. Six months later she was asked to manage the MI team as well.

In 2019 she became Head of Actionable Insights and has led a team to build a suite of interactive dashboards for our Large Corporate clients. To ensure these dashboards landed well Sam realised the internal and external stakeholders needed to be fully trained to glean insights themselves.

Roll on to 2023 and 42 clients are fully trained to access 68 dashboards to glean their own insight. Now Sam’s team have launched a summary version of the dashboard for all clients and spend their time working with them bringing their data to life.

“Being able to tell an interesting story with data is so satisfying. You capture your stakeholder’s attention, emotions, and curiosity, inspiring them to take action. The relationship becomes more of a partnership – trading insight to build a complete picture.”

Alex is a Senior Programme Manager in the AXA UK Claims Analytics team driving the delivery of Machine Learning models into the Motor, Property, and Casualty claims journeys. Alex has experience managing complex data projects, bringing business stakeholders and technical development teams together to improve the claims journey for AXA’s customers.

Alex’s ambition is to ensure Machine Learning and Data solutions can be clearly articulated and understood by the end users. For data projects to be successful there must be a collaboration between technical and non-technical teams, which she champions through the programme’s delivery methodology. The business’ need is the centre of delivery, and any data project should be able to quantify the benefit it produces both tangibly and intangibly.

Alex has previously held positions as Product and Project managers supporting data lake, DBMS, and IT projects in the Insurance and Non-Profit Sectors.
