How Compare the market seeS the data landscape changing in the next 5 years

The UK data landscape is entering a defining era.

AI is moving from experimentation into infrastructure. It is becoming central to strategy, products, and customer experience. Over the next five years, the question will not be whether organisations use AI, but whether they can operationalise it safely, transparently, and at scale.

We expect to see AI firmly established as a board-level capability, not just a technical function. Regulatory scrutiny around fairness, explainability, and accountability will continue to grow, making governance by design, AI observability, and trusted data foundations essential. Competitive advantage will increasingly depend on how well data, technology, product, risk, and compliance work together.

At Compare the Market, we are already preparing for this shift. By embedding responsible AI, strong governance, and cross-functional collaboration into our strategy today, we are positioning ourselves not only to adapt to the future, but to help shape it.

The organisations that succeed will not simply build smarter models. They will build safer systems and earn consumer trust at scale. That is the future of data in the UK, and we intend to lead in it.

ABOUT compare the market

Launched in 2006, Compare the Market has grown into one of the UK’s leading digital comparison platforms, helping millions of households make smarter decisions across insurance, utilities and money. Today, we compare more than 700 providers across 1,200 products, generating millions of quotes every year. Widely recognised as a household brand – thanks in part to our furry Meerkat friends, Aleksandr and Sergei – we’re fundamentally a data-led business. Our platform combines advanced analytics, AI and automated quoting to deliver personalised comparisons and customer-led insight as we continue investing in the future of data and AI.

I’m Roberta, Director of Data & AI Solutions at Compare the Market, where I lead our transformation towards becoming an AI-first business. My focus is on embedding data and AI into how we operate, serve customers, and shape our future. I’m passionate about building AI that is intelligent, trusted, explainable, and safe, while bringing together technology, product, governance, and security behind a shared ambition.

My journey into technology hasn’t been traditional. I grew up in an environment where women were not expected to pursue ambitious careers, so I carved my own path into mathematics and technology. I worked hard to create opportunities for myself and refused to accept the limitations placed on me. That experience shaped how I lead today.

Over the past 18 years, I’ve led data, AI, and analytics across fintech and global technology organisations including Dojo, Visa, Meta, and Ocado Technology. Along the way, I’ve learned that leadership is not just about strategy or technology. It is about resilience, courage, and helping others see what is possible for themselves.

I’m inspired by the opportunity to shape what responsible AI means in practice. As a neurodiverse leader, I think deeply about fairness, clarity, and systems that work for everyone. I care about building human-centred, transparent AI and creating environments where diverse minds are not just included, but genuinely valued.

Above all, I’m a proud mum to three incredible boys who keep me grounded, curious, and constantly learning. I’m also an active member of the Women in Data® community because I know the power of visibility and how transformational it is to finally see someone like you in the room.

I’m Emanuela Ciotti, Head of Enterprise Analytics at Compare the Market. I lead our enterprise analytics function, bringing together analytics engineering, customer, commercial, and product analytics to ensure data sits at the heart of how we make decisions. My focus is on turning complexity into clarity, shaping our data strategy, aligning teams around meaningful metrics, and delivering insights that drive real business impact. I’m passionate about building high-performing teams and creating a culture where data is accessible, trusted, and empowering for everyone.

My journey began with a Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Bologna, where I developed a strong foundation in problem solving and analytical thinking. I started my career as a data analyst, working closely with product and commercial teams, before moving into analytics engineering and product analytics leadership roles.

Over time, I’ve built and led multidisciplinary teams, designed scalable data strategies, and partnered with senior leaders to embed analytics into strategic decision making. These experiences have reinforced my belief that great data leadership is not only about technical excellence, but about bringing people together, simplifying complexity, and helping others grow.

I’m inspired by the moment when data truly clicks for someone – when a clear insight unlocks a better decision, a stronger product, or a more confident strategy. I’m equally motivated by developing people and creating environments where curiosity, collaboration, and positivity thrive.

Beyond my role, I’m passionate about mentorship and supporting more women to build fulfilling careers in data and AI.

My name is Ellie, and I’m the Data Protection and Privacy Operations Manager at Compare the Market. My role focuses on ensuring we process customer and employee data in line with UK GDPR and other privacy legislation, embedding strong privacy practices into how we work every day.

My career journey hasn’t followed a traditional path. I didn’t attend university and began my career as a temp on a facilities helpdesk at a financial regulator, which became my first step into the corporate world. From there, I seconded into an information rights team, where I started processing individual rights requests and discovered privacy as a career. That experience sparked my interest, led me to gain professional qualifications, and eventually into consulting on complex, consumer-focused regulatory projects. I later joined Compare the Market as a Data Governance Lead before moving fully back into privacy, where I’ve now spent nearly 12 years.

My interest in privacy originally came from studying law at A level. What really fascinated me was seeing how legislation works in practice. The law might say individuals have certain rights, but my role is about ensuring those rights work operationally – turning legal principles into meaningful protections for people.

I’m inspired by the original purpose of privacy regulation: protecting individuals from harm. Remembering that bigger picture helps keep me grounded, especially when work feels challenging. My advice to others is to quiet imposter syndrome – you’re far more capable than you think.

Hi, I’m Omotolani, and I’m a Machine Learning Engineer at Compare the Market. I build machine learning and AI systems, using both traditional models and generative AI, to support both customer-facing and internal use cases. My work involves taking ideas from early exploration through to production, ensuring the solutions we build deliver real value.

My path into data and AI hasn’t been a straight line. I studied computer science, where an AI course first sparked my interest, but I began my career as a Product Manager at a fintech startup. Working on products end to end helped me realise how critical data is to strong decision-making. That curiosity led me to pursue a Master’s in Data Science, after which I worked across analytics engineering and data science before moving into machine learning engineering.

One highlight of my journey was working on an NLP project in a regulatory environment, using language models to improve the efficiency of policy document summarisation. Seeing the practical impact of that work shaped how I think about applying machine learning thoughtfully and responsibly.

What I enjoy most about this field is the combination of problem-solving, continuous learning, and seeing people use the solutions I’ve built. My advice to others starting out is simple: don’t shrink yourself. You don’t need to know everything from the start—curiosity, consistency, and effort can take you a long way.

I’m Tracy, a Senior Business Intelligence Engineer at Compare the Market. I help turn complex data into meaningful insights that drive smarter business decisions, from KPI reporting through to supporting machine learning initiatives across the business.

My journey into data wasn’t linear. I started in a more traditional software engineering role but was gradually drawn to the creativity and challenge of Business Intelligence. The fast pace of the field, combined with the opportunity to continuously learn new tools and approaches, is what’s kept me engaged.

I’ve worked on a range of impactful projects, from automating reporting pipelines that save hours of manual effort each day, to building data models that improve how we communicate with our customers. Those projects really highlight the value of strong data foundations

What inspires me most is the tangible impact that good data practices can have, especially when they improve customer experience or influence key decisions. I also really enjoy the balance of logic, problem-solving, and collaboration across the business.

My name’s Bethany, and I’m a Senior Data Scientist in the Data and AI Products Team at Compare the Market. I work in a fast-paced, ambitious environment where data, AI, and product come together to build scalable, customer-focused solutions that create value for both the business and our customers.

My undergraduate degree was in Computer Science, and since graduating I’ve worked across start-ups, scale-ups, and NASDAQ-listed organisations in industries including property, healthcare, e-entertainment, and comparison aggregators. Throughout my career, my work has been strongly customer focused, combining technical depth with strategic and commercial thinking to deliver data-driven solutions that make a real impact.

What I enjoy most is seeing the models and products I’ve helped build genuinely improve the customer experience. I get a lot of energy from big ideas, teamwork, and collaborating with people who are passionate about what they do and the problems they’re solving.

One of the best pieces of advice I received early in my career was, “Don’t be ashamed if you don’t know, be ashamed if you don’t ask.” It helped me develop a growth mindset and the confidence to keep learning from those around me. My advice to new data scientists is to stay curious, commit to continuous learning, and build deep expertise in an area of data science. It’s a real confidence booster and makes you invaluable to your team.

I’m an Analytics Manager at Compare the Market, working at the intersection of Advanced Analytics and Data Science. My role is hands-on, leading a team that supports commercial decision-making by delivering insights that shape pricing strategies and drive measurable outcomes for both the business and our customers.

I grew up with an unusual but complementary mix of creativity and a love of mathematics. I originally aspired to be an architect, but the impact of the 2008 financial crisis on the construction industry prompted me to pivot towards Mathematics and Statistics, a decision I’ve never regretted.

After completing a Mathematics degree at the University of Warwick, I began my career in aviation, where I spent nine years working across data roles, travelling extensively and building experience in data, machine learning, and applied analytics. After completing a Master’s in Data Science and AI, I was ready for a new challenge and moved into insurance, drawn by Compare the Market’s strong data-driven culture and clear strategic vision for analytics.

My mum spent her entire career breaking glass ceilings in insurance, and her diligence, consistency, and professionalism have always inspired me. Some of my proudest career moments have come from helping others grow – supporting high-potential colleagues, offering honest feedback, and seeing them succeed.

What I enjoy most about working in data is uncovering insights that fundamentally change how a problem is understood or open new approaches to pricing and commercial strategy. My advice to other women in data is simple: speak up, ask questions, and share your perspective.

I am General Counsel at the Information Commissioner’s Office, the UK regulator for personal data and Freedom of Information. I have been in this role since August 2025, leading on the ICO’s legal strategy and governance, and advising on complex data protection and information rights matters ultimately ensuring regulatory compliance and the responsible use of individuals’ data.

My career in data has centred around the theme of data guardianship, and ensuring data is used responsibly, ethically, and with legal certainty by those entrusted to it. Compliance isn’t just about following rules but about creating trust so that the value of data can be fully realised.

My route into a career in data has been via various public sector roles.  Prior to joining the ICO I was General Counsel and Director of Devolution, Governance and Law at the Electoral Commission. This followed a variety of legal posts in the Government Legal Department, most recently as head of the legal team responsible for data protection and civil society at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), where I led on reforming data protection policy and legislation, dealing with data issues arising out of Brexit, and delivering government initiatives in civil society policy.

Working in data is a broad topic which I find varied and fascinating.  I can put my wide range of experience in policy making, regulation, and law to good use.  The work we do has real world implications and it is important to bring diverse perspectives to tackling the challenges in data.

It’s incredibly important to me that everyone has the opportunity to get involved in the sector and type of work that interests them, regardless of background, gender or ethnicity. That’s why initiatives such as Women In Data – and the ICO’s Women’s Network, of which I am the Executive Sponsor – play such an important role in overcoming barriers that would otherwise remain incredibly challenging to surmount, and we need to continue promoting equal opportunities and inclusion for everyone.
