Kubrick exists to solve the technology skills emergency, which includes the gender and diversity divide in the data industry – that’s why we are committed to hiring cohorts of consultants of which 40% identify as female. Our partnership with Women in Data is a pivotal avenue to connect with women across the industry, where we can listen, learn, and share in order to improve the experiences of those who are already transforming businesses with data, as well as encourage today’s graduates and young professionals to join in the technology revolution. 

Jessica Macleod, Data Engineer

Bio

After graduating with a first-class degree in Mathematics with Statistics, Jess chose to train as a Data Engineer with Kubrick in order to pursue an alternative to the traditional pathway into the finance industry for graduates of her academic background. She is passionate about the data industry because of the immense possibility for her career development and believes that taking a chance on a career in data has paid off both personally and professionally. With the the fast pace of change, she is excited to build on the foundation of transferable skills she has gained and explore other fields like data science, AI, and cloud technology. 

After several years working on client engagements, Jess has recently joined Kubrick’s inhouse project team to continue challenging her skills as well as lead squads of junior consultants. She is proud of the culture and environment which Kubrick has created for women working in data, which begins with equal pay for consultants in training and onsite. She sees her personal and emotional growth throughout her time with Kubrick as an asset to help support new consultants on their journey.

Bio

Maria joined Kubrick in July 2018 as a Data Management consultant. After completing our training and 2-year development period onsite with clients, she joined the Kubrick Training and Development team in April 2021 in order to share her experience and technical skill with new consultants and encourage their development. As an Associate Principal, she helps Kubrick to stay on the cutting-edge of technological development by undertaking research and content creation to expand our training and capabilities, understand our clients’ needs, and improve project delivery in the training lab to push our consultants to the fore.

Whilst on site with our clients, Maria specialised in implementing data quality rules and controls using next-generation technology, progressing to a managerial role for data quality processes. Throughout her time as a consultant, she faced many challenges when navigating the gender dynamics and seniority of project members. She is proud to have not simply proved her skill to her colleagues, but also proved it to herself. She is grateful to be able to use her experience, struggles, and achievements to give newly trained consultants a better foundation to be the best they can be.

How Kubrick see the data landscape changing in the UK in the next 5 years

The last 5 years has seen unprecedented growth of data collection and use, which is only set to accelerate in the next 5. The demand for the skills required support rapid data transformations has never been greater, and the supply never more limited. We have turned our focus to prepare for AI and cloud technology revolution, which are inextricably interwoven with strong data engineering, governance, and literacy, by creating new specialist training programmes dedicated to Machine Learning and cloud engineering. We recognise the significant impact which biases and inequality can have when implementing these technologies and the importance of focussing on improving diversity and inclusion within the data industry to address these risks.
