Spotlight on Lucy Johnson

Name: Lucy Johnson

Job Title: Managing Director, Underwriting Services

Expertise: Building, developing and leading commercially minded teams to deliver profitable growth. Specialising in businesses in Financial Services, where data and analytical strategies drive a competitive edge.

Education: BSc (Hons) Maths, Operational Research, Statistics & Economics

First and foremost Lucy is passionate about leadership and delivers success through her ability to build a team of capable and energetic colleagues who are keen to make a difference. Lucy’s analytical mind-set has enabled her to lead businesses where there is a competitive advantage for those organisations who develop and deploy data-led strategies most effectively.

As Managing Director of Underwriting Services and a member of the Executive Committee at Hastings, Lucy leads her teams to drive profitable underwriting performance through the deployment of market leading pricing strategies.

Before joining Hastings in 2013, Lucy spent 13 years in Barclays. Starting in the Retail Bank with roles spanning all areas she then moved to Barclaycard, specialising in UK consumer lending. Her final position in Barclaycard was as Managing Director for Small Business Cards – leading the portfolio to double digit income and profit growth.

Lucy is a strong advocate for diversity in the workplace, leading Hastings’ Ethnic Diversity taskforce, and plays an active role in sponsoring, supporting and encouraging other women across the company.

Lucy lives on the south coast with her husband and son and loves to travel and explore new places.

Spotlight on Talaat Rosy

Name: Talaat Rosy

Job role: Trainee Actuary

Expertise: Analysing data and building models.

Education: BSc Maths and Management from Kings College London

In Talaat’s own words… data is king! In her role as a trainee Actuary, Talaat thrives on finding new data – from checking, processing and analysing it, to refining technical, pricing and market models contributing to the best products that Hastings can offer its customers.

Educated at Kings College, London, Talaat graduated with BSc (Hons) Maths and Management and has used data throughout her working life. At Hastings Direct she has had the opportunity to be involved from start to finish in the creation of brand new Home insurance products. Working both individually and as a team, Taalat has contributed to building a model, calibrating it to adjust for any anomalies and align it to desired competitiveness. From testing the models and analysing outputs, to reporting expected outcomes, the whole process highlighted the importance of good data.

At work, Taalat enjoys the support of the leadership team and the open atmosphere of Hastings, along with the recognition of great work – as well as the social events and community work. She loves problem solving and takes pride in feeling like she has contributed to successful projects and seeing the benefit.

How Hastings Direct see the data landscape changing in the UK in the next 5 years

Hastings operates in the highly competitive motor insurance market where the key driver to purchase is price.  This need to offer the best price (sufficiently competitive and profitable) puts data at the heart of our business.

We believe that the winners in motor insurance will:

  • Understand and compete effectively in their data rich market place – price comparison websites
  • Outpace the competition in the ‘arms race’ to establish the best price for any given customer
  • Use data and analysis to optimise business processes
  • Use artificial intelligence to increase the pace and accuracy of pricing decisions

Investments in people capability, data infrastructure and tool sets are only growing in importance, Hastings has invested heavily in this space and expects to continue to do so into the future.
